Area code 602 is a North American telephone area code assigned to Phoenix, Arizona. First assigned in 1947 as one of the original 86 area codes in the North American Numbering Plan, 602 is among the oldest area codes in the country. It serves the city of Phoenix proper, and is a local (non-toll-free) area code in the Mountain Standard Time Zone (Arizona does not observe daylight saving time).

602 originally covered all of Arizona. The 1995 split (520) carved out the southern half of the state. As the Phoenix metro grew, 1999's 480 split removed the East Valley (Mesa, Tempe, Scottsdale, Chandler), and 2001's 623 split removed the West Valley (Glendale, Peoria, Surprise) — leaving 602 with just the city of Phoenix itself. Unlike most major-metro 1947 codes, 602 has not been overlaid — making it one of the few preserved single-code city centers. A 602 number is still tightly identified with Phoenix proper.
