216 originally covered all of northern Ohio. Successive splits — 419 (1947) for the western lake shore, 330 (1996) for Akron and Canton, and 440 (1997) for the Cleveland suburbs — carved 216 down to just the city of Cleveland and inner Cuyahoga County. Unlike most major-metro codes, 216 has not been overlaid — making it one of the few preserved single-code city centers. A 216 number remains tightly identified with Cleveland proper and the city's healthcare, manufacturing, and music heritage.
