Area code 718 is a North American telephone area code assigned to New York City's outer boroughs — Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. Created in 1984 when 212 was split to relieve number exhaustion, 718 became the dedicated code for everything outside Manhattan. It is a local (non-toll-free) area code in the Eastern Time Zone.

Until 1984, all five boroughs of New York City shared the iconic 212 area code. As mobile and dial-up demand exploded, the New York Public Service Commission split off 718 to cover Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island, leaving 212 to Manhattan alone. As outer-borough demand grew further, overlays 347 (1999) and 929 (2011) were added, forming a three-code overlay (718/347/929). Despite the overlays, 718 remains the heritage code of outer New York — deeply tied to the cultural identity of Brooklyn and Queens, especially in music and small business.
