What is Area Code 312?

Area code 312 is a North American telephone area code assigned to downtown Chicago, Illinois. First assigned in 1947 as one of the original 86 area codes in the North American Numbering Plan, 312 is among the oldest and most recognized area codes in the country. It now serves the central business district including the Loop, the Near North Side, the West Loop, and adjacent neighborhoods. It is a local (non-toll-free) area code in the Central Time Zone.

For nearly 50 years, 312 served all of Chicago and much of northeastern Illinois. Rapid growth in mobile phones and dial-up internet exhausted available 312 numbers, so in 1996 the Illinois Commerce Commission split out 773 for the rest of Chicago and 847 for the northern suburbs, leaving 312 with just the central business district. Overlay 872 was added in 2009. Despite the smaller footprint, a 312 number remains a status symbol — strongly associated with established Loop businesses, law firms, and finance.
